Your
Family at the Centre
Your family
is important at our Centre. We know that parents are the most important
people in their child's life, so our staff work as partners with
parents to provide the best care possible.
Our staff are
trained in child development and early childhood education. We give
the children a chance to make friends, learn about themselves and
about the world around them.
But nobody knows
your child better than you do. You know best your child's favourite
things, interests, fears, joys and hopes. You know how the members
of your family get along. And you have shared so many experiences
with your child, from family parties to the first day of school.
We want to talk
with you about what is happening at home, at school and at day care
- so we can all understand your child better. We want to work together
with all those involved in your child's day. The more consistent
we adults are, the more secure your child is likely to feel. When
children feel secure, they are more likely to explore, to try new
things, to learn and to enjoy!
Our door is
always open to your family members. Stop in any time. Why don't
you join us for lunch someday?

Families
Get Involved
We want families
to feel that the Centre belongs to them. Here are some ways your
family can be involved at the Centre. Each family has their own
interests and free time; the important thing is that you choose
and enjoy the way you take part.
When you get
involved, you might find new friends and interests!
You might:
- Share a favourite
family snack recipe;
- Come to a
pot luck supper, winter party or family dance;
- Join your
child in playing a game or finishing an activity before going
home at the end of the day;
- Donate supplies,
materials for the program, such as: old office equipment, yogurt
containers, computer paper;
- Arrange a
field trip;
- Talk with
other parents;
- Join the
Society's Board of Directors;
- Talk about
the importance of quality child care to your friends, relatives
and other people in the community;
- Attend a
workshop on child development, sexuality, discipline or nutrition;
- Make suggestions
to staff about a new activity idea;
- Read to children
in the book corner;
- Invite grandparents,
an aunt or uncle to visit the centre; and,
We believe in
an inclusive program in which children can be themselves and share
their cultures. Please share with us celebrations that you do at
home and your way of celebrating. What is important to your child
is important to us.

Our
Program's Philosophy
We believe that
children's programs should provide experiences which foster each
child's growth and development. We believe that children's programs
should create an environment where friendships are encouraged and
each child learns a positive sense of him/herself.
The philosophy
of our program is that children learn best through play and by doing.
You'll see lots of materials and activities available each day for
the children to experiment with and explore. By seeing, hearing,
touching, tasting and smelling the objects, people and events in
their environment, children can learn first hand about the world
they live in.
The Day Care
follows the Society's inclusionary philosophy, which allows the
opportunity for all children to participate to their full potential
in the program, regardless of race, religion, ethnic origin, family
status, or physical or developmental ability.

Our
Program's Goals
The most important
goal of our program is to give children a positive sense of themselves.
We encourage children to try new things, ask questions and say what
they think. You'll notice that our staff spend lots of time talking
with the children. Staff make positive comments about what children
say and do. We want children to be confident, independent and eager
to learn.
Our program
sets goals for each child in all areas of development:
- Social:
to encourage children to be comfortable at the Centre, to make
friends and to feel part of the group.
- Emotional:
to encourage children to feel pride and self-confidence, to develop
independence, self-control and a positive attitude.
- Physical:
to help children enjoy indoor and outdoor play, to develop large
and small muscle skills and independence in self-help skills,
to provide equipment and experiences for children to challenge
themselves and others.
- Cognitive:
to encourage children to ask questions, make decisions and solve
problems, to encourage trying out new ideas, to help children
become excited about learning, to provide cooperative team experiences
where children learn group dynamics and working with others.
- Creative:
to provide opportunities for children to express themselves
and their feelings through art, music and drama, to encourage
and support imaginative thinking, to provide a variety of `projects'
for the children to explore and create.

Our
Staff, Our Centre, Our Program
Our Program:
The children are assigned to one of the three rooms in "family
groups" which include children aged 6-12yrs. These age groups
allow children to work at their own level of development with their
peers and older children can take a leadership role while the younger
children learn from the older one.
Staff are also
assigned to one of the rooms and plan activities based on the needs
and interests of the children in that room. The three rooms each
have a variety of activity centres, which have things like puzzles,
drama materials, books, games, creative art supplies, music and
construction toys.
Parents and
staff are encouraged to talk to each other often about what is happening
with the children. When concerns come up for you, the staff in your
child's room is the first person to talk to. The Program Director
will also be happy to discuss any concerns with you. If you are
not satisfied with how a concern is resolved, there is also a formal
appeal procedure within Community Options.
Our Staff:
Our Centre is staffed by people who understand what preschool
children are all about. Our Program Director has post-secondary
education in the field of Early Childhood Development or a related
field. All of our staff have First Aid Certificates, all have annual
Security Clearances and Child Welfare Checks.
Staff also take
part in a variety of professional development opportunities throughout
the year to improve their skills when working with your child.
