Inclusive Child Care

Who We Are

Inclusive Child Care is a child and family focused program which provides support to families seeking an inclusive child care experience (which includes family day homes) for their preschool children who have disabilities. Support to families may include: consultation, resource referral, program information and funding for additional supports.

Inclusive Child Care is funded by Edmonton and Area Child and Family Services Region 6.

Who Is Eligible?

Any child from birth to school age in the Edmonton Region (Region 6) whose parents are working or attending school and who requires additional supports to attend and be included in a community child care setting.

What Do We Do?

  • Visit with each family to discuss care options such as child care programs or family day home;

  • Provide parents with information about community resources and programs;

  • Determine what supports the child requires in order to fully participate at the child care centre or family day home;

  • Facilitate the Individual Early Childhood Plan which is reviewed annually or as required;

  • Monitor, in conjunction with parents, the implementation of the Individual Early Childhood Plan;

  • Review support needs on a regular basis;

  • Provide families and child care staff with consultation, resources and inservice opportunities; and,

  • Ensure that agencies who receive funds, maintain Community Options program requirements and standards of practice criteria (please call 732-7560 for more information)

What Funding Do We Provide?

Depending on the needs of the individual child, Inclusive Child Care may fund:

  • Additional personnel to enhance ratios at a child care centre;

  • Rooms within a centre with several children needing support may be funded based on their needs and circumstances;
  • Workshops and information for parents and staff;

  • An additional space in a Family Day Home setting if required to enhance ratios; and,

  • An additional space in a child care centre if required to enhance ratios.

Families are encouraged to contact an Inclusive Child Care Coordinator at 455-1818. Inquiries are also welcome from specialists, doctors, day care and school personnel, etc.
