Educational Assistant

Community Options has been a PUF provider of inclusive education solutions focusing on early learning and intervention services in Edmonton region for the past 40 years. As a successful candidate you would have the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team of Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Family Liaison, Speech Language Pathologists and other Educational Assistants to provide services to children in their community program (day-care, preschool, kindergarten) and family oriented programming in the child’s home or with small group. You will encourage, educate and inspire children, parents, colleagues and donors.

Location:   Edmonton and Surrounding Area

Hours:    Monday to Friday, follows 2017/2018 school hours and calendar

Job Type:  Hourly-Contract - 2017/2018 Academic School year (ending mid to end of June 2018)

Start date:   August 30, 2017 until mid or end of June 2018

Skills and Qualifications:  At a minimum, applicants are required to have:

  • Experience and/or training in both Special education and early childhood education
  • Child Care Certification minimum Level 1 within 90 days of hire
  • Experience with pre-schoolers is preferred
  • Champion of inclusive philosophy
  • Child Intervention and a Criminal Record Check is required for employment (6 months or more recent)
  • Standard Child Care First Aid & CPR (to be completed within 3 months of employment)
  • Vehicle (travel from site to site is reimbursed )
  • Driver’s Abstract and 2 million dollar liability (if applicable)

The position of Educational Assistant is a term position with Community Options – A Society for Children and Families. Educational Assistant positions are attached to the Community Preschool Education Program (CPE).  All Educational Assistants are members of a trans-disciplinary team, which provides assessment, consultation, and educational supports and services for children experiencing difficulties in social, developmental, communication, physical, play, and overall preschool skills development. Educational Assistant reports directly to the Coordinating Teacher.


Services must always be provided in the least intrusive manner that does not draw unnecessary attention to the child being served, or to the child's disability.  Educational Assistants work within the organizational philosophy that all families have a right to options for their children, have a right to quality care for their children, and have the right to choose their level of involvement with their child’s program, and with Community Options for Children and Families.  


  • Educational Assistants will implement the program for the child in accordance with the guidelines stated in the Individual Program Plan as developed by the child’s parents and consulting team (which includes the educational assistant.
  • Educational Assistants will include all children in activities, and actively promote the inclusion of all children.
  • Educational Assistants promote child to child interactions and model and respond equally to the needs of all children in the program.
  • Educational Assistants will work together as a team, to ensure the child’s individual goals and objectives are being met.
  • Educational Assistants meets with the Coordinating Teacher, community program staff, therapists, and other appropriate individuals involved with the child.
  • Educational Assistants integrates feedback, suggestions or recommendations made by consulting team into daily activities with children.
  • Educational Assistants will communicate with parents on a regular basis and will respect the confidentiality of family information.
  • Educational Assistants will attend monthly training sessions.
  • Educational Assistants will document the child’s progress in a Program Binder.
  • The Educational Assistant ensures that information placed in the Program Binder is treated in such a manner as to ensure secure confidentiality.
  • This binder’s contents are the property of the parent, and must be accessible at all times to parents, Community Options personnel, and Government Consultants upon request.  The Binder must contain the following:

                A.            Individual Program Plan, weekly planning of activities and reports;          

   B.            Notes and recommendations from the Teacher or Therapists and contact notes from all   communication received or sent regarding the child;

   C.            Assessments and reports from Therapists;

  D.            History (eg. letters)

  • The Educational Assistant may have other responsibilities assigned from time to time, including participation in activities, workshops and events.
  • Timesheets will be submitted in a timely manner on a semi-monthly basis in accordance with the annual payroll schedule, accurately reflecting all hours worked, and will be signed by both employee and site supervisor prior to submitting to EA Coordinator.
  • The Educational Assistant submits documentation of expenses, hours of work, and other records as required or requested by the CPE Program Manager or Accountant, within the 1st week of the following month the expense was incurred (with the exception of June of each year. All expenses in June need to be submitted by the end of the month).
  • Educational Assistants will fax or email to EA Coordinator the Child’s Monthly Attendance Sheet.

  • Regular outdoor work is required, including during inclement weather.
  • Required to meet physical demands of the position, including potential frequent kneeling and squatting up to 75% of the shift.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Duties depend on the specific needs of the children they are working with.
  • Child Care Certification minimum Level 1 within 90 days of hire
  • Standard Child Care First Aid within 90 days of hire.
